Airport Lines

One of my favorite past times is traveling via "jet airplane at 30,000 feet in the air". Many of us call it flying. Actually, I would be remiss to say that the actual fact of flying is my favorite so much as it is an anticlimactic event compared to the task of getting on the airplane. I often wonder what goes through the minds of the people who are waiting to get on the plane. Are they really even listening to what the flight attendant is saying? Do they understand that those who have seats in the middle of the plane or the back of the plane get loaded on last?! I will give some slack to those who have never flown on an airplane before, but for the 99.99999% who have flown, what is your problem?

On my return flight from Seattle a week ago, this phenomenon occurred again. The flight attendant began her routine of calling families with small kids and old people. 40 year old men, couples with no children and random people run to clog up the entrance of the gate. Meanwhile, the people who need assistance getting on the plane are locked out by people who can't even get on the plane yet. The plane isn't going to leave without them, their seat isn't going to be taken, they won't run out of meow mix (which is what they serve now that everyone is allergic to peanuts). It's mind-boggling. The pandemonium that hits people as they begin to call out the rows is even funnier. Now that their row has been called, they now have full license to "form" a darwinian line (survival of the fittest, where fittest means largest luggage and most dirty looks).

Ha! I love it. It's even better when they call the first class passengers (and row 6) to board after the assistance people, and poachers try and sneak on. As if the flight attendant forgot what rows were called. "Sorry, we're not boarding your row yet." Another one of my favorite things is mob mentality. If someone else in a undefined group begins to do something everyone else should. If someone makes a move for the gate everyone then panics and begins to rush towards the gate because they might now let them on! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

While they are mobbing towards the gate, I calmly walk by to the flight attendant b/c I am in row 6.

  • I agree. It's fun to watch as people scramble to try to get to the front of the line. My method is to sit and wait till I'm one of the last on, whether they call my row or not. I dislike lines.

  • I stopped riding on planes when they stopped passing out the plastic wings.
